How to make any rangoli

  1. Sweep and wipe the floor so the powder sits evenly.
  2. Draw the outline in chalk first. Use a bangle or a plate for circles and a string tied to a chalk for big rounds.
  3. Trace the lines in white powder, pinching it between thumb and finger and letting it fall in a thin stream.
  4. Fill the shapes from the centre outwards, so you don’t lean on finished parts. A small katori or spoon helps with big areas.
  5. Finish with marigold petals and diyas around the edge. Keep lit diyas away from children and clothes.

Questions parents ask

Which rangoli is easiest for a beginner?
The flower and star designs. They are made of big simple shapes and need only about 30 minutes.
What do I need?
A piece of chalk, white rangoli powder for the outlines, five or six colours of rangoli powder and a small katori or spoon to pour from.
Can children help?
Yes. Let an adult draw the outline, then children can fill the big shapes with their fingers. Keep lit diyas out of reach.
Are these photos of real rangolis?
They are colour illustrations made to look like real rangoli powder, so you can copy the design and colours.
